Farm to Fork on Film

Food&FarmFilmFest

If the questions ‘what’s in my food and how did it get there’ ever occur to you then you may be interested in a Food & Farm Film Festival being held at Haven Coffeebar this month.
The film festival kicks off with Ingredients, a feature-length documentary at 2.30pm on Sunday 10th February. The film is a seasonal exploration of the local food movement with the focal point being the farmers and chefs who are creating a truly sustainable food system.

Ingredients is a journey that reveals the people behind the movement to bring good food back to the table and health back to our communities. Members of the Southern Inverness County Food Production Cooperative will be available to chat about their projects at this time.

The festival ties up with the FarmWorks Investment Co-operative at 6pm on Wednesday 20th when The Greenhorns will be shown following a brief presentation by Linda Best who will answer questions like ‘What is FarmWorks, what’s the purpose of this CEDIF and what are the tax advantages for investors?’ while The Greenhorns documentary film explores the lives of America’s young farming community.

The finale of the film festival is at 2.30pm on Sunday 24th February where the Canadian documentary To Make A Farm will be screened. This movie asks what the future of local food and farming might look like as it explores of the lives of five young people who have decided to become small-scale farmers. This will be followed by a TABLES co-operative seed buying initiative.

All three films will be shown at Haven Coffeebar, Port Hawkesbury Waterfront where there will be canapés and seating for about thirty people.

Port Hawkesbury Community Market starts tomorrow!!

Press Release

June 11, 2012

Port Hawkesbury Community Market Grows with Local Support!

Port Hawkesbury, NS – There’s a new kid in town; it’s the Port Hawkesbury Community Market!  Over a dozen local vendors are bringing their products to the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre on June 14th in what will be the first in a series of five monthly markets.  Visitors to the Community Market can expect to find sea glass jewelry, purses made from reclaimed fabric, beauty products, flowers (annuals, perennials, etc), manure and compost products, wool products, fresh farm eggs, and a selection of delicious baked goods!  It is very early in the season, so there will be a minimal selection of fresh produce.  Keep in mind however, that we are only getting started and there will be plenty of unique and local products from which to choose.  Jamie’s artisan bread and Martin’s German pretzels have been a favorite at markets already – a treat not to be missed!

Starting this Thursday, June 14, and continuing on the second Thursday of each month until October, a Community Market will be held in the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m.   The specific market dates are June 14th, July 12th, August 9th, September 13th, and a grand finale of a Market on October 8th in celebration of Thanksgiving Day.  It has never been more important than now to take pride in and make connections in our communities. This market is driven by a group of committed volunteers and vendors who are thrilled to create a vibrant shopping experience and bring a diverse group of people together through a shared social space.

Interested vendors are encouraged to contact Amanda at the Strait-Highlands RDA to reserve their spot at any of our Markets (amanda.mombourquette@strait-highlands.ns.ca).  It’s not too late to book your table for June 14!  Tables are just $16 each and can be booked for each market session – you don’t need to book for the whole season.  This is the first year for the Port Hawkesbury Farmers’ Market, and as such Market organizers anticipate making frequent tweaks to the Market during this season to ensure that we meets the expectations of both vendors and consumers.  So please, let us know if you have a great idea for the Market!

In particular, we are looking to grow the food product side of our Market offering as the season progresses. One of the ways we are encouraging entrepreneurism is by offering two “incubator tables” for small scale produce growers – the hobbyist gardener – who may have excess product they’ve grown at home.  These growers are invited to bring their fresh produce to the Market and we will provide them with a table at no cost up until they reach a certain level of sales.  This could be your opportunity to cash in on your green thumb!  Contact Amanda for details.

We’ll also have resources available for people who are interested in starting to garden.  Our good friends at TABLES (online Facebook Group) will be at the Market will lots of helpful growing information.  TABLES is a local food advocacy group in Southern Cape Breton – they have the expertise to help you get started growing on the right foot.  We’ll also have connections to small business start-up resources for those considering taking their food or artisan business to the next level.

There will be something for everyone at the Port Hawkesbury Community Market.  So, mark your calendar for June 14 and see you at the Market!

Cape Breton Farmers Market, Saturday 26th May, 2012 – Kingsville Farm Special

It’s been a while since we posted about a special. It’s not that we haven’t been doing them rather I haven’t had to sit around for hours at the end of a baking day feeding 8 loaves at a time into the oven… ah, the bliss of my professional kitchen.

This week our special really is a special, not that our previous specials aren’t special, or that all of our bread isn’t special, but this week it really really is special as it’s a Rosemary & Spanish Seas Salt Focaccia. We’re also bringing our unbleached white, wholewheat, 100% spelt and a sandwich rye bread, which are all special too. Oh, and of course there will be some multigrain and olive rolls, and our very special devon scones, made with cream instead of milk.

See you at the market.

Jamie

We’re now at Antigonish Farmers Market every Saturday 8am-1pm at the 4H barn on James Street. Customers are welcome to order from our menu beforehand and then collect their goods at the market.

Saturday May 5th was our first market and myself, Isobel and Baby Rose would like to thank all the vendors and customers who bought our bread and made us feel so welcome. It was also great to see some familiar faces from Port Hawkesbury and Mabou!

Support needed for Port Hawkesbury Farmers Market!

Kingsville Farm apologises but the Dept of Agriculture has determined that we do not have the correct permit to sell our delicious artisan breads and sweets each Thursday at the Port Hawkesbury Shopping Centre. We would however be able to sell at a farmers market so encourage you all to rally round and support the TABLES group on facebook in their efforts to start a Farmers Market in Port Hawkesbury. We would like to thank you for your custom and advise that we can be found at Antigonish, Mabou, Sydney and Whycocomagh Farmers Markets, and hopefully one in Port Hawkesbury soon! Regards, Jamie and Laura

Cape Breton Farmers Market, Saturday 14th April, 2012 – Kingsville Farm Special

Well we got the snow out of the way early this week, with a light sprinkling this afternoon that despite the chilly temperature is nowhere to be seen now. Those odd bedfellows Pete and Kalin at the CBC tell me that it’ll be nice tomorrow as well, with the mercury hitting the double digits so we expect to see quite a few of you at the market in Sydney.

Our special this weekend sees a return of the ever popular Parmesan & Herb Potato Bread… oh dear, is that the THIRD week in a row? Looks like I might have just inducted into the ranks of the regular breads. Okay, so I’ll have to come up with another special. How about a delicious Devon Scone Sandwich? Two of our showstopping Devon Scones (made with cream you see) joined together in a blissful harmony through the medium of Jam.

Mmmmm, tomorrow is going to be tasty :)

Cape Breton Farmers Market, Saturday 7th April, 2012 – Kingsville Farm Special

To help you celebrate Easter this weekend we’re bringing our popular Herb and Parmesan Potato Bread to sell alongside the unbleached organic white and wholewheat bread, malty multigrain and 100% spelt. And if that’s not enough for you we’re also bring an army of Hot Cross Bunnies! You seriously have to check these guys out – I don’t know if it was the hot water down their rabbit hole or if I mixed-a-their-toasties too much, but they’re definitely mad.

Let’s hope your Good Friday is followed by a great Saturday! See you at the market :)

Cape Breton Farmers Market, March 10th – Kingsville Farm Special

Wow, the first weekend in a while without biblical amounts of snow predicted and after the balminess of recent days it’s starting to feel a bit like spring. With that in mind our special this week will be a classic Light Rye sandwich loaf… perfect for a picnic or just to bring a bit of spring to your lunchbreak.

We’ll also be bringing 100% spelt, extra malty multigrain, wholewheat and unbleached white, all made with organic flour from the Meunerie Milanaise and baked without any oil, fat, dairy, sugars or preservatives.

See you at the market!

Cape Breton Farmers Market, March 3rd – Kingsville Farm Special

Spelt is back! And because we’ve missed it so we’ve gone a little overboard, baking some Rye & Spelt Rustic Loaves and Eyes of St Helen rolls to go with our usual 100% spelt bread.

We’re also going to tempt you with some supermoist Carrot, Apple and Raisin Muffins and our divine Devon Scones, plus as St Davids Day was during the week we’re rounding the sweet treats off with some traditional welshcakes.

For once the snowfall isn’t expected until lunchtime so we expect an early rush at the market – make sure you’re there early too so you don’t miss out!
