Sunday 14th April, 2.30pm-4pm, Food & Farm Film Festival continues…

Postponed from February we will be showing the film ‘Ingredients’ which looks at how chefs and farmers are working together and how you can shop locally at your farmers market. We will be open for lunch and coffee from 12 noon with the film scheduled to start at 2:30pm.

http://www.ingredientsfilm.com/

Tuesday 16th April, 11am-2pm, ‘Meet the Artist’ with Steve Rankin.

Steve will be at the Haven to chat about his photography over lunch. He will also be selling prints of his work.

We’d like to say a big thank you to Steve and congratulate him on his upcoming installation at the Inverness County Centre for the Arts where he will be one of the ’30 Under 30′ artists to display their work in August. If you can’t wait until then you can always check out his work online at http://steverankinphotography.com/

Tuesday 23rd April, Change of artist with Amanda Leigh Mac Innis.

We say a fond farewell to Steve Rankins rustic buildings and spectral nightscapes and welcome Amanda Leigh Mac Innis’ striking acrylics inspired by the wholesome beauty of Cape Breton. Her personal style of exaggerated blue skies and earthy rust tones are repeated throughout her work giving credence to her unique perspective and natural talent.

We’re really pleased that Amanda is showing her art here as she is a farmer, fisherman, a comrade from the farmers markets and an excellent chef to boot. Amanda is also one of the Inverness ’30 under 30′ artists. We feel that she epitomises the philosophy that we are trying to achieve at Haven Coffeebar with high quality local food enhancing the customer experience.

After exhibiting Viki Ogdens artwork and that of L’Arches Angels Loft, Mabou photographer Steve Rankin is displaying some of his work at the Haven Coffeebar in Port Hawkesbury.

Having spent several years in Halifax Steve Rankin has moved back to Inverness County to capture Cape Bretons beauty one click at a time. He has selected a range of shots from abandoned buildings to churches and spectral nightscapes to hang on the walls of the popular new venue on Port Hawkesbury’s waterfront.

All of the items exhibited are for sale, be they framed prints or large canvasses, and Steve will be on hand one sunny afternoon in April to answer questions, explain his technique or just guide you through the stunning work that he is becoming famed for. You can also view more of his work online at SteveRankinPhotography.com.

Haven Coffeebar is located on Port Hawkesbury’s waterfront where they sell from scratch soup, sandwiches and artisan baked goods, as well as coffee from local roasters and crafts, preserves, beauty products and gifts from Cape Breton artisans. They are open Monday – Friday from 8am-4pm. Their menu is available to view at HavenCoffeebar.com.

If the questions ‘what’s in my food and how did it get there’ ever occur to you then you may be interested in a Food & Farm Film Festival being held at Haven Coffeebar this month.
The film festival kicks off with Ingredients, a feature-length documentary at 2.30pm on Sunday 10th February. The film is a seasonal exploration of the local food movement with the focal point being the farmers and chefs who are creating a truly sustainable food system.

Ingredients is a journey that reveals the people behind the movement to bring good food back to the table and health back to our communities. Members of the Southern Inverness County Food Production Cooperative will be available to chat about their projects at this time.

The festival ties up with the FarmWorks Investment Co-operative at 6pm on Wednesday 20th when The Greenhorns will be shown following a brief presentation by Linda Best who will answer questions like ‘What is FarmWorks, what’s the purpose of this CEDIF and what are the tax advantages for investors?’ while The Greenhorns documentary film explores the lives of America’s young farming community.

The finale of the film festival is at 2.30pm on Sunday 24th February where the Canadian documentary To Make A Farm will be screened. This movie asks what the future of local food and farming might look like as it explores of the lives of five young people who have decided to become small-scale farmers. This will be followed by a TABLES co-operative seed buying initiative.

All three films will be shown at Haven Coffeebar, Port Hawkesbury Waterfront where there will be canapés and seating for about thirty people.

Happy New Year and welcome to winter!!

Our first Haven Christmas was a lot of fun. Thank you to all our customers who came in and supported us over the festive season. On to 2013 and we have exciting new plans and events afoot!

From mid-January Juanita MacInnis of ‘The Cat and her Kittens’ will be baking with us every Tuesday. Juanita is from Whycocomagh and specialises in gluten-free and diabetic baking, as well as regular baked goods. We will be stocking ‘The Cat and her Kittens’ lovely stuff at Haven. We’ll post a short interview with Juanita here in the next couple of weeks, you can also check out her facebook page https://www.facebook.com/TheCatAndHerKittens or visit Juanita at Cape Breton Farmers Market (Sydney) every Saturday.

‘Tis the season for soup!! We love soup and what could be better for a winter lunch than a bowl of the steaming stuff with a crusty chunk of bread, maybe with a sprinkle of cheese (from the Wandering Shepherd of course) or some melty herby butter floating on the top. We will aim to be as local and seasonal as possible. If you have any interesting recipes, soup stories or even veg, please let us know! This week we will kick off with some Spicy Butternut Squash with garlic from Jane & Tom Oomens Wild Roots Farm, Centreville.

February Food Film Festival! Next month we will be hitching up a projector and screening the following film documentaries relating to food and sustainable agricultur – ‘Our Daily Bread’, ‘Jiro Dreams of Sushi’ and ‘The Greenhorns’. Check back here or on our facebook page for final details over the next couple of weeks.

Our winter opening hours are as follows: Monday – Friday 8.30am – 4pm (weather dependent)

Please note that Jamie is usually in the bakery from 5amish, so if you see lights on before 8.30am please do call in!

Not only will this move allow us to supply restaurants, hotels and shops in other towns, cities and villages but we’ll be opening Station House up as a shop for the good folks of the Strait area too. And wouldn’t it be a shame if you couldn’t soak up the view or shelter from the weather with a gourmet coffee or speciality tea to go with a number of new sweet treats and hearty sandwiches… Renovations are under way at the Kingsville Farm Bakery & Coffeebar- we’ll keep you updated via facebook and this website and hope to see you there soon.

Press Release

June 11, 2012

Port Hawkesbury Community Market Grows with Local Support!

Port Hawkesbury, NS – There’s a new kid in town; it’s the Port Hawkesbury Community Market! Over a dozen local vendors are bringing their products to the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre on June 14th in what will be the first in a series of five monthly markets. Visitors to the Community Market can expect to find sea glass jewelry, purses made from reclaimed fabric, beauty products, flowers (annuals, perennials, etc), manure and compost products, wool products, fresh farm eggs, and a selection of delicious baked goods! It is very early in the season, so there will be a minimal selection of fresh produce. Keep in mind however, that we are only getting started and there will be plenty of unique and local products from which to choose. Jamie’s artisan bread and Martin’s German pretzels have been a favorite at markets already – a treat not to be missed!

Starting this Thursday, June 14, and continuing on the second Thursday of each month until October, a Community Market will be held in the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. The specific market dates are June 14th, July 12th, August 9th, September 13th, and a grand finale of a Market on October 8th in celebration of Thanksgiving Day. It has never been more important than now to take pride in and make connections in our communities. This market is driven by a group of committed volunteers and vendors who are thrilled to create a vibrant shopping experience and bring a diverse group of people together through a shared social space.

Interested vendors are encouraged to contact Amanda at the Strait-Highlands RDA to reserve their spot at any of our Markets (amanda.mombourquette@strait-highlands.ns.ca). It’s not too late to book your table for June 14! Tables are just $16 each and can be booked for each market session – you don’t need to book for the whole season. This is the first year for the Port Hawkesbury Farmers’ Market, and as such Market organizers anticipate making frequent tweaks to the Market during this season to ensure that we meets the expectations of both vendors and consumers. So please, let us know if you have a great idea for the Market!

In particular, we are looking to grow the food product side of our Market offering as the season progresses. One of the ways we are encouraging entrepreneurism is by offering two “incubator tables” for small scale produce growers – the hobbyist gardener – who may have excess product they’ve grown at home. These growers are invited to bring their fresh produce to the Market and we will provide them with a table at no cost up until they reach a certain level of sales. This could be your opportunity to cash in on your green thumb! Contact Amanda for details.

We’ll also have resources available for people who are interested in starting to garden. Our good friends at TABLES (online Facebook Group) will be at the Market will lots of helpful growing information. TABLES is a local food advocacy group in Southern Cape Breton – they have the expertise to help you get started growing on the right foot. We’ll also have connections to small business start-up resources for those considering taking their food or artisan business to the next level.

There will be something for everyone at the Port Hawkesbury Community Market. So, mark your calendar for June 14 and see you at the Market!

It’s been a while since we posted about a special. It’s not that we haven’t been doing them rather I haven’t had to sit around for hours at the end of a baking day feeding 8 loaves at a time into the oven… ah, the bliss of my professional kitchen.

This week our special really is a special, not that our previous specials aren’t special, or that all of our bread isn’t special, but this week it really really is special as it’s a Rosemary & Spanish Seas Salt Focaccia. We’re also bringing our unbleached white, wholewheat, 100% spelt and a sandwich rye bread, which are all special too. Oh, and of course there will be some multigrain and olive rolls, and our very special devon scones, made with cream instead of milk.

See you at the market.
